What is Frozen sections?
Frozen sections is a tissue sparing surgical technique which allows for a real-time diagnosis by examining a frozen section of the excised tissue to determine if any cancerous cells remain. This procedure is ideal for skin cancers in sensitive areas. Frozen sections are quick to prepare, taking about 30 minutes. The tissue is examined by a pathologist at the time of the surgery to help ensure all margins are free. The difference between the Mohs procedure and Frozen sections is the removal size of tissue. Mohs surgeons take thin layers of tissue, which are examined under a microscope by a trained Mohs doctor.
